Abstrakt: | Background: Musculoskeletal pain is one of the major causes of disability in industrialised countries. Failure to treat this condition effectively carries an economic and personal cost. Pharmacological strategies may be associated with adverse events (AEs) or complications, whereas non-pharmacological treatments may reduce pain and promote healing with fewer AEs. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two self-heating Calmadol® devices on pain and joint flexibility, as well as their safety and acceptability to patients. Methods: This single-centre clinical trial was conducted from September to November 2019 in individuals with musculoskeletal pain (n = 100). Participants were randomly assigned to apply either a self-heating patch (n = 50) or wrap (n = 50). Pain perception (primary endpoint) was self-assessed by each participant using an 11-point verbal numerical score (0–10 VNS). Joint flexibility (secondary endpoint) was assessed by measuring the range of motion (ROM). Safety was assessed by the investigator and self-assessed by each participant using VNS. Results: Participants wearing the patch had a 33.3% reduction in initial pain, whilst wrap users experienced a 27.3% reduction. In patch users, cervical spine and shoulder flexibility improved significantly by 10.7% and 2.2%, respectively. Wrap users experienced a significant 13.6% improvement in cervical spine flexibility and a 5.5% improvement in shoulder flexibility. Thirty-six participants self-reported AEs, but no adverse events were identified by the investigator. Over 80% of participants were satisfied with the devices. Conclusions: The Calmadol® self-heating patch and wrap both significantly reduced pain and effectively increased the ROM with a satisfactory safety profile in patients with shoulder or neck pain.
