Massive settler metropolises in the Desert West, such as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona, use vast amounts of electricity derived from coal and oil extracted from less inhabited desert locales. Of Mules and Mesquites In the summer and early fall of 1849, nearly 10,000 gold seekers crossed the Sonoran Desert, bravely - or foolishly - following a trail of broken wagons, bones, and trash, the detritus left behind by those who passed through this desert before them. The Colorado Desert hosts an impressive range of legume trees, each of which furnishes valuable protein to human and nonhuman desert dwellers: blue palo verde, ironwood, honey and screwbean mesquite, and catclaw, among others.
