Numerical ability is an important skills in the 21st Century. The research aims to describe cognitive experience of students with field dependent and field independent cognitive style in numerical mathematics problem solving. Type of this research was qualitative research. The research subject was student of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta in academic year 2020/2021. The research instruments were questionnaire of cognitive style and problem solving task on numerical mathematics. Data analyses were done through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusion. Based on findings at the knowing stage, students with Field Dependent cognitive styles could remember formulas and perform algorithm procedurescorrectly. Students with Field Independent cognitive stylescould classify problem-solving into other forms that had similar characteristics and could perform algorithmic procedures correctly. At the applying stage, subjects with Field Dependent cognitive styles could choose the right strategy but they had not yet implemented the chosen strategy correctly. Subjects with Field Independent cognitive stylescould provide the correct interpretation of the problem-solving obtained. At the reasoning stage, students with Field Dependent cognitive styles could not yet combine elements with one another so that the right problem solving was not yet obtained. Students with Field Independent cognitive styles could analyze, evaluate, and justify mathematical procedures to obtain the right problem-solving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
