A way of updating current medical electron accelerators is developed that could allow the distribution of a dose in a patient's body to be assessed in real time during irradiation. A mathematical model is presented that allows the distribution of an absorbed dose in a given area of tissue to be determined from that of annihilation photons produced during irradiation.
