In this paper, we investigate the influence of women workers on the growth of SMEs operating in economic downturns. Our results suggest that the disproportional spikes in women unemployment observed during recessions are not only unjust but also harmful to SMEs striving to weather crises. Analyzing the performance of 10,445 SMEs during the Brazilian economic crisis of 2015-2017, we found that an increase in the percentage of women employees in the total workforce of SMEs boosts their growth. Additionally, we identified that these firms grow further by increasing women employees' wages, by preferring more women workers with higher levels of education and experience or, preferably, by retaining more educated women who are better paid at the same time. These results carry lessons for SMEs facing current and future crises and contribute to the study of gender and firm performance and to efforts to reduce the persistent gender gap in businesses.
