Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) have been struggling to diversify their revenue sources to reduce their reliance on government grant funding. States' decisions to expand Medicaid would make most low-income uninsured people eligible for Medicaid coverage and could help FQHCs increase their financial viability by reducing their grant to total revenue ratio. We extracted a national sample of 729 FQHCs from the Uniform Data System and the Internal Revenue Service Form 990 in 2009-2018. The dependent variable was the grant to revenue ratio and the independent variable was the states' Medicaid expansion status. Mixed-effects regression was applied controlling for organizational, patient, and community factors. FQHCs operating in Medicaid expansion states had lower grant ratios (β=-4.51, p<.01). As the past decade's funding volatilities have shown, overreliance on one revenue source can be risky. Medicaid expansion can help FQHCs improve their short-term and long-term sustainability.
