Two Brian-Al efforts that didn't make the final tracklist included Back Home, a song which Brian had initially written with friend Bob Norberg and recorded with The Beach Boys in 1963, and Good Time. After listening to the rest of the songs The Beach Boys had submitted, which included a selection of breezy Brian, Brian-Mike and Brian-Al co-writes - among them Two Can Play, Good Time and When Girls Get Together - the label rejected the record. While Carl himself would continue to develop as a songwriter - notably with The Trader, from Holland - The Beach Boys would delve into their cache of unreleased 1969-'71 material to help shape albums throughout the decade, whether that be with Dennis' careworn Old Movie (finished as Cuddle Up for Carl And The Passions) or Brian and Al's carefree Good Time (The Beach Boys Love You, 1977). Five years later, however, The Beach Boys elevated pop music to the level of high art with Pet Sounds, whose symphonic ambitions were enough of a departure to signal the group's maturity without spooking their fanbase; it remains a landmark, not only in their career, but in pop history.
