We study the production of fibers with Solution Blow Spinning (SBS) for low values of both the polymer molecular weight and the air-coflow pressure. Specifically, we analyze the influence of the air-coflow temperature and the spinneret position on the diameter and size polydispersity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) fibers. Our results show that the fiber diameter decreases as the coflow temperature decreases. The coflowing airstream produces whipping oscillations of the viscoelastic jet in front of the spinneret. The amplitude of these oscillations is larger in the non-protruding (sunken) configuration, i.e., when the spinneret is positioned inside the air tube. This effect does not translate into a significant dependence of the jet and fiber diameters on the spinneret position. We conclude that it is recommendable to use the protruding configuration to prevent the jet from touching the air tube. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
