The forward rate (dehydration) of the chemical reaction; H2CO3 = H2O + CO2 is too fast to allow for a distinction between CO2 and HCO2 utilization by algae with the methods of Hood and Park (1962), it was shown experimentally that the effects of gas purging on the uptake of C14O2 by Chlorella pyrenoidosa at low and at high pH are not directly comparable. Gas purging in the pH range 5–7 removed all the inorganic carbon from the medium within minutes. At pH 8–9.5 the concentration of free CO– was virtually unaffected by gas purging.
