Prioritising the preference criteria for an internship undergraduate programme based on gender differences: An application of analytical hierarchy process.

Abstrakt: Internships have been widely used as an educational component for local and private university students as an overall part of curricula as a cooperative learning initiative and an attractive bridge for students to enter the labour market. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the priority of expectation and satisfaction criteria for undergraduate internship programs based on gender differences. The expectation is described that the interns believe and hope for the benefit they gain before starting internships. Meanwhile, satisfaction is described that the interns are successfully getting the benefits from the company during their internship program. Ten main criteria have been identified via the literature review processes as needed by the interns from their internship program. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to rank multiple criteria based on the weighted score in terms of methodology. The rank numbers of criteria were arranged from the highest to lowest score by their importance. Finding from AHP analysis shows that the criteria of developing technical skills and communication have the highest importance values. On the other hand, the criteria of developing technical skills and the provided on-job training have the highest importance values. These results indicate the most important criteria for meeting expectations and satisfaction for female interns and male interns. In conclusion, the method of AHP prioritisation helps to manage criteria that may have equal importance and focus on important criteria that satisfy the needs or desires, or both of them. This study will be helpful to the management of companies to determine the criteria or factors that influence the expectation and satisfaction of our university students' during their internship program.
