Abstrakt: The article examines clinical usefulness of the Schedule of Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) diagnostic interview in evaluations of criminal responsibility. The study consisted of a consecutive sampling of all SADS-based criminal responsibility evaluations from June l980 to June 1983 at an outpatient forensic clinic. Sane and insane evaluatees showed significant differences in their overall scores on the SADS for the period of the crime. The findings suggest that the SADS diagnostic interview may differentiate effectively between individuals clinically evaluated as sane and insane. Significant differences were noted, particularly in the psychotic symptomatology, which focuses on hallucinations, delusions and gross disorganizations of thinking.
