The article discusses treatment expectations of psychiatric inpatients and their relationship to psychiatric diagnosis. In most admissions to psychiatric hospitals, the patient's presenting symptomatology and diagnosis are emphasized in the planning of treatment. While clinical and diagnostic features are undoubtedly important aspects of every psychiatric evaluation, it is becoming increasingly apparent that patients are admitted to the hospital with a variety of treatment expectations unrelated to their manifest symptomatology. |
