Abstrakt: This article presents and summarizes the activities for the process development of arsenic removal in a stable form from industrial water, conducted in the Research and Development Department of Aurubis Bulgaria, Pirdop. The aim of the work was to develop and validate a process for arsenic fixation, as an alternative to the existing process used in the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) at the Aurubis Bulgaria copper smelter and refinery plant. First tests were performed in a laboratory scale and the synthesis of scorodite from wastewater has been successfully demonstrated, both in batch and continuous operation. A crystalline structure of the precipitate was confirmed by X-Ray diffraction analysis and its stability was proved by leaching test procedure according to the environmental standard EN 12457-2. At a later stage, pilot tests were planned and performed to verify the process and the parameters. In summary, the results obtained in the pilot-scale test work confirmed those obtained from the laboratory tests. Based on the results from the tests, a process flowsheet has been proposed, which includes a modification of the existing wastewater treatment plant with the integration of an additional treatment stage to remove arsenic in the form of a scorodite.
