Abstrakt: Higher education institutions are facing several challenges of producing excellent graduates in academic and also preparing them to compete in the job market. Self-identity development is very important among students and needs to be fully addressed by the university to produce quality graduates and to meet demand in the global marketplace. The study aims to compare the identity development among students over the four years they are at university using Chickering’s Theory of Self Development (1969). Data collection using semi-structured interview methods. Five first year students and four final year students were interviewed. The selected data is processed using NVivo 10.0 software. The findings show that Chickering’s Self Development Theory is significant in identifying the development of first and final year student’s identity. It indicates that this theory is able to be as a guideline for the university in preparing curriculum and cocurriculum activities for the students. This study found that Chickering’s Self Development Theory is suitable to be applied in developing student’s self-identity. Based on this theory, students’ self-identity development listed seven vectors which can be divided into two main stages, namely the first phase of student identity development consisting of vector 1 to 4 and the second phase of student identity development starting from vector 5 until 7. This study provides information on how to undertake student development activities by focusing on the development of student identities based on the two phases of Chickering’s Self Development Theory.
