The old studio system that had carefully guarded the wholesomeness of movies for decades had crumbled, and Hollywood's titanic film factories were being outpaced by nimble independent producers with lower budgets and more adult story themes. Left, Johnny Whitaker (Tom Sawyer) had starred in the hit TV series Family Affair for five years at the time of filming; movie and stage star Celeste Holm (Aunt Polly) was a three-time Academy Award nominee and won for her supporting role in Gentleman's Agreement.
