Under the influence of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), Kanagawa Dental University started online lessons from the beginning of the 2020 academic year. From the second stage, we started hybrid lessons that are both online and face-to-face lessons and allowed those who wish to have face-to-face lessons to attend school after taking measures to prevent COVID-19. Since the end of COVID-19 has not been seen in the 2021 academic year, we are continuing the hybrid lessons. Many of the current 1st- and 2nd-year students have not yet been able to attend school except during testing periods. Under these circumstances, there was a significant change in the distribution of the term exam score in the first-year chemistry subjects. Although the results of the hybrid lessons showed no difference in average scores between the online and face-to-face groups, the median groups decreased and the upper and lower groups increased. The students were unable to plan their studies and left unsolvable problems as they were, resulting in widening academic achievement gaps. In addition, objective tests conducted as a countermeasure resulted in a tendency to lower academic performance compared to previous years. Objective tests, which tend to be biased toward simple recall, were shown to make it difficult to deepen understanding and prone to memorizationcentered learning. In the future, it was suggested that it is necessary to consider learning methods to provide effective teaching based on learners using distance learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
