Phase formation in the barium fluoride–lanthanum fluoride (BaF2–LaF3) system at 350–450°С was studied using fluxed melt syntheses. The precursors used were barium nitrate and lanthanum nitrate, the fluorinating agent used was sodium fluoride, and the solvent used was sodium nitrate. The characterization methods used were X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ba1 –xLaxF2 +x fluorite solid solution (ss), where х = 0.3–0.5 (30–50 mol % LaF3), was found to be formed. The ss particles had submicron sizes and a cubic morphology as probed by SEM. Lanthanum fluoride-base ss was not formed under the synthesis conditions used; the LaF3 product was thin hexagonal platelets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
