Abstrakt: A crude enzyme system was obtained from oat coleoptiles which converted glucose-1-phosphate to glucose-6-phosphate. This system was shown to be reversibly inhibited by fluoride in vitro. The system was inhibited by direct exposure to ozone or peroxyacetyl nitrate. Exposure of intact cells to ozone did not produce an inhibited enzyme system but exposure to peroxyacetyl nitrate did result in partial enzyme inactivation. It was suggested that inhibition of phosphoglucomutase may be the major cause of fluoride-induced inhibition of cellulose biosynthesis. Inhibition of the enzyme by air pollutant oxidants, however, may only partially account for ozone or peroxyacetyl nitrate-induced inhibition of cellulose synthesis in oat coleoptiles.
