A study of university students spending time with young people with autism.

Abstrakt: Aims: This study aimed to clarify the experiences of university students following their participation in a project where they spent time with young people with autism. Methods: Students at İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University, Turkey, volunteered to take part in a project where they met and socialised with young people with autism. At the end of the project, focus group interviews were held with the students. Findings: In the descriptive analysis, themes such as prejudice, anxiety and fear, benefit, lack of knowledge, friendship, normality and experience were determined. The students stated that the participants with autism and their parents, as well as themselves, benefited from the project. Conclusion: After completing the project, the university students stated that they were able to get acquainted with and effectively socialise with children with autism and that this experience was beneficial to them.
