By presenting notable examples of progressive clergy, including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. William Barber, and Rev. William Sloane Coffin, they illustrate how religious leaders can also serve as political activists. Alongside the quantitative data, the descriptions of politically engaged clergy provide the backdrop for why we would expect political congregations to impact attendees' policy attitudes and levels of activism. In the midst of considerable attention to the link between religion and politics on the conservative side, R. K. Brown, R. E. Brown, and Jackson (2021) draw our attention to potential of religious communities to challenge entrenched inequality and mobilize progressive activism. [Extracted from the article] |
