This study investigated the Inhibitory/excitatory effect of Starchytarpheta jamaicensis, Garcinia kola and combination in intraocular pressure. Fifty five adult New Zealand rabbits (n=5) were topically administered with aqueous extracts of Starchytarpheta jamaicensis (SJ), Garcinia kola (GK) and synergistic combination in 1% prednisolone induced-intraocular pressure (IOP) for 14 days in rabbits. The control groups were administered with prednisolone, and 0.5% Timolol. The test groups received graded doses (0.00351, 0.00702 and 0.0143 kg/l) of aqueous. The internal and external eye examination were observed using penlight/hand magnifier and ophthalmoscope to determine the baseline using Perkins hand held tonometer at value of >5 mmHg above baseline. The result showed a significant decrease in the mean intraocular pressure of SJ (6.33±0.58 mmHg), GK (6.11±0.29 mmHg) and combination (5.33 ± 0.29 mmHg)} when compared with untreated control (13.00±1.00 mmHg) (p<0.05). In conclusion, this study validated the effects of the extracts, in managing ocular hypertension and glaucoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
