The article focuses on the importance of speech education in the high school curriculum. Some school systems have employed specially trained and licensed teachers of speech, and the organization of special classes in speech correction, speech fundamentals, and speech arts as a part of the regular curricular work. The teacher of English and the teacher of speech have certain things in common. But it is not true that preparation for the teaching of English necessarily includes preparation for the teaching of speech. Both the teacher of English and the teacher of speech are concerned with words. Unless the teacher knows what to do about the speech skills involved, the speaking habits of the pupils will not become better. |
