Abstrakt: This article presents interaction analysis of small problem-solving groups containing reticent and non-reticent members. The work done to date on reticence may hold implications for a variety of communicative situations far beyond classroom instruction in communication skills. However, at least four basic problems must be attended to if work in this area is to be of any benefit to, or have any impact on, a more general theory of communicative behavior. Although this construct has apparently been useful for some communication researchers, there have been almost no reported attempts to refine the concept or to resolve the disparities among the variety of definitions of reticence offered by writers.
