This article discusses pediatric imaging for the Philips Mx8000 series scanners and to describe methods used at Philips Medical Systems to reduce pediatric doses while maintaining good diagnostic image quality. The dose efficiency built into the scanner's design is probably the most important element in successful lowdose performance. The Mx 8000 series scanners have a relatively high designed-in dose efficiency. CT system manufacturers have recently implemented a display of dose on their system's operating consoles in accordance with IEC Standard 60601-2-44. This dose display feature provides a reference dose to CTDI head and body phantoms for any selected head or body scan protocol. It is easy for CT equipment manufacturers to provide default, low-dose, pediatric protocols that fail to produce satisfactory clinical image quality. It is common and easy for clinical institutions, in order to produce satisfactory image quality, to generate their own too-high dose protocols. |
