Abstrakt: Stomata are pores located at the epidermis layer of the leaves which function is to control the dehydration rate and gas exchange between the plants and its environment. Whereas stomatal conductance (gs) is a measurement on the degree of stomatal opening. Stomatal conductance (molm−2s−1) can be measured using porometer and can be used as an indicator of plant water status. Stomatal conductance occurs during day and night-time in many plants, but most of the previous studies focused only on gs during day-time. This study thus, aims to compare the differential of stomatal conductance during day (gsday) and night-time (gsnight) in eggplant seedlings (Solanum melongena). The experiment is conducted in an open environment under shaded area using 30 eggplant seedlings. The leaf porometer is used to measure gs and the measurements are taken during day-time between 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and night-time between 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The result shows that, gs during the day-time is significantly higher compared to gs during the night-time (P≤0.05). Since gs is directly related to plant water status, this finding can be useful to predict plant physiological traits including photosynthesis and transpiration rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
