Abstrakt: Athletic departments in Canada are complex operations with myriad stakeholders and business mandates. Indeed, managing an athletic department requires multiple competencies; thus, the purpose of the current study was twofold. First, the goal was to understand the precedence, or priority, of the functional/operational competencies needed for Canadian Athletic Directors, at the post-secondary level, to perform in their role. Second, the authors aimed to identify if differences in perceptions of role competencies, between college and university ADs, existed. Specifically, empirical data from 84 senior athletic administrators from across Canada were collected. For both college and university respondents, competencies related to Developing Vision, Budgeting/ Operational Finance, and Staffing Issues were the most important to have. Some dissimilarity around perceptions of the importance of competencies surrounding Athlete Affairs, Revenue Generation, Policy Making/Enactment, and League Initiatives emerged.
