Abstrakt: There are currently 70 active hand surgeons in Finland (about 1.3 hand surgeons per 100,000 people). Typically, up to two hand surgery positions are available per year in each of the five universities that offer a hand surgery training programme in Finland. Hand surgery as a full speciality Hand surgery remained a sub-specialization until 1999, when the number of officially approved medical sub-specializations had increased to such an extent that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health decided to significantly reduce it.
