A differential diagnosis was documented in 67 (33.8%) charts; each differential diagnosis considered a mean of 2.31 (SD = 1.05) diagnoses and averaged 64.63 (SD = 37.30) words. We excluded these patients to ensure all studied cases were potentially complex adult medical encounters requiring the full use of the EP diagnostic process and to eliminate patients where the diagnosis was likely to be straightforward or clear at the time of presentation to the ED.
