This study investigates the synthesis of an economical, potential acid activated perlite catalyst by modifications of silica-alumina enriched, natural waste-perlite through thermal and chemical activations with polyphosphoric acid whose catalytic activity was evaluated for the series of liquid phase Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions. Structural modifications were determined by XRD and FT-IR techniques. Surface and morphology were revealed by SEM analysis. Elemental composition was determined by SEM-EDX analysis. Presence of surface active acidic sites was studied by Hammett indicator method. The catalyst could be recycled up to five reaction runs without any significant loss in activity conferring its stability during course of reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
