Abstrakt: The article discusses Italian navigator Christopher Columbus's statue, which was made in Santo Domingo's Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in 1877. It engages the visual and material culture of nation-building and the ideology of progress and contributes to a growing body of research seeking to identify the intersections between monuments and memorials and the histories of race, gender, colonialism, and nationalism.
