The kinetics of oxidation of Ba–Ge melts in atmospheric oxygen is studied by thermogravimetry, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Germanium additives up to 50 wt % are shown to increase the oxidation stability of the alloys. The oxidation rate of the Ba–Ge melts increases with the temperature. The oxidation of the melts obeys a parabolic law. The true oxidation rate is of the order of 10–4 kg/(m2 s). The apparent oxidation activation energy is 39.08–262 kJ/mol depending on the alloy composition. The oxidation products of the alloys are BaGe4O9 and GeO2. The mechanism of the influence of germanium on the oxidation kinetics of the Ba–Ge melts is determined. The BaGe4O9 oxide plays the dominant role in the formation of a protective oxide film.
