The bacteriological and mycological flora in chronic paronychia have been examined in a series of 44 patients in whom 91 nails were affected. The most frequently isolated organism was Candida albicans but always in association with bacteria, especially those from the lower bowel and Staphylococcus pyogenes. The factors predisposing to infection, the reasons for its persistence and the problems of treatment are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
