The editors discuss the role of dental practitioners in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. They attribute poor oral hygiene among PTSD patients to the co-existence of medication-related xerostomia and stress-related pernicuous oral health behaviors such as smoking and alcoholism. They note the effectiveness of calibrated dental splints in reducing noxious nocturnal symptoms of PTSD including sleep disruptions, headaches and nightmares based on study findings. |
