PHARMACOLOGICAL THERAPY b B 5.1 Glucose-lowering therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes and no previous cardiovascular events b Which glucose-lowering agents should be considered as first-, second- and third-line therapy for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes and no previous cardiovascular events? Treatment with basal insulin b Question: Should basal insulin analogues be preferred to NPH insulin in insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes? B Aim: b This guideline is aimed at providing a reference for the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Treatment with prandial insulin b Question: Should prandial insulin analogues be preferred to human regular insulin in insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes? B Results: b The present guideline contains recommendations on the following clinical aspects of type 2 diabetes: 1) treatment targets; 2) nutritional therapy; 3) physical exercise; 4) educational therapy; 5) pharmacological treatment (for patients with and without previous cardiovascular disease); and 6) glycemic monitoring.
