Abstrakt: This article reports that substance use is a relapse-prone disorder, and for many individuals, recovery from substance use requires ongoing support. The growing popularity of 12-step groups has led clinicians and researchers to seek elucidation of why 12-step participation is beneficial to its members. This large body of work spanning several decades has yielded valuable insights. A number of process studies have examined the dynamic relationship between 12-step participation and social networks as it relates to abstinence outcomes.
