In 1915, the Danish archaeologist Jens Winther first described the tool “skivekniv”, best translated as “flake knife with a protruding edge” or “flake knife with a chisel edge”. At the time, Winther suggested that the tool had been used for decorating pottery, but this has not been further investigated, and the actual function of the tool type has never been determined. After finding several ”skiveknive” over the recent years in the district of Museum Nordsjælland, the interest in the tool type was renewed, and 41 knives from two different sites were subjected to use-wear analysis. These analysis show that the knives have been used for at very specific task, in a very specific way, as the use-wear is very similar on all of them. The knives have not been used for decorating pottery, but have been used on a plant material. The specific material and the specific task is yet unknown, hence there is still some work to be done before a final conclusion on this “mysterious” tool type can be reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
