Abstrakt: Broad offers a very important study of both the history and historiography of one pilot's experiences in the RFC during two of the most critical years of the air war over the Western Front. Surviving a nine-month tour that included the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and a second two-month tour in which he was killed on the Western Front over the Ypres salient in December 1917, McKay typifies the experience of the average pilot of the First World War. 'Searching for Eddie McKay was like trying to find a needle in a haystack - and occasionally a needle in a stack of needles' (pp. iv). [Extracted from the article]
