Abstrakt: Flying foxes are a genus of megabats known as Pteropus and are among the largest bats in the world Mainland Australia has four species of Pteropus flying fox: black (Pteropus alecto), grey-headed (P. poliocephalus), little red (P. scapulatus) and spectacled (P. conspicillatus). Causes of NZ bat decline Long-tailed bats were common throughout New Zealand in the 1800s, although from the early 1900s to about 1930 they became scarce in many districts. FEATURES Henricus Peters compares the natural worlds of Australia - a land of extremes - with neighbour New Zealand, establishing a foundation for the wide differences and some surprising similarities of species that inhabit both countries. There are two species of bats in New Zealand; the long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) and the lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculate). [Extracted from the article]
