Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Myrmecodea tuberose Jack ethanol on Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic nephropathy rats. Materials and Methods: Diabetic rats were established by injection of streptozotocin (40 mg/kg) to rats. Diabetic rats were randomly grouped and treated daily with various doses of M. tuberose ethanol extract (400, 500, and 600 mg/kg) and glibenclamide as a positive control (0.45 mg/kg) by gavage for 21 days. After M. tuberose treatment, the following parameters were measured such as blood glucose, urea and creatinine on day-0, 7, 14, and 28. Results: The results showed that streptozotocin-induced a significant rise in blood glucose, urea and creatinine levels in rats. M. tuberose tuber ethanol extract contained several secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, polyphenols, and tannins. Administration of ethanol extract of M. tuberose Jack tuber at a dose of 600 mg/kg significantly reduced the blood glucose (88.8 mg/dL), urea (23.32 mg/dL) and creatinine levels (0.42 mg/dL) in diabetic rats. Conclusion: These results suggested that ethanol extract of M. tuberose tuber decreased the progression of diabetic nephropathy in STZ-induced diabetic rats by controlling the blood glucose, urea and creatinine levels.
