Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely aggressive malignant disease of the pleura, most commonly associated with asbestos exposure. Histologically, three different histological subtypes of MPM are observed – epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and mixed (biphasic). Patients with sarcomatoid histology have much shorter survival than the other subtypes, are not suitable for surgical treatment, and have a poor response to systemic therapy. We present a case of a 51-year-old man with complaints of progressive shortness of breath, cough, and easily tiring from about a month, who was admitted for surgical treatment with a suspected echinococcal cyst but was diagnosed intraoperatively with diffuse malignant mesothelioma of the pleura. Cytoreductive surgery was performed by decortication and pleurectomy. Postoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy were performed. Diagnostic methods, staging difficulties, and treatment options are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
