Abstrakt: Water quality deterioration in lagoons comes from excessive nutrient inputs, eutrophication, acidification, heavy metal contamination, organic pollution and obnoxious fishing practices. The water quality data obtained were analysed using a host of statistical tools such as descriptive statistics [mean, standard error of the mean, variance, standard deviation etc.]. The rotated component matrix helps one to determine what the components represent. It indicates that the first five principal components together account for 75.025% of the total variance in the dataset, in which the first principal component is 24.922%, the second principal component is 40.480%, the third principal component is 52.497%, the fourth principal component is 64.343% and the fifth principal component is 75.025% of the total variance. It was found that FESTAC Canal suffers from deterioration in the quality of the surface water due to municipal and industrial discharges. However, the concept of Basin-wide planning has been felt necessary for sustainable development in Nigeria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
