Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex multi-systemic metabolic disorder with numerous reported highlighting presences of altered salivary composition and function in it. Aims and Objectives: The present study was undertaken for assessing the correlation of salivary glucose level with blood glucose level in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: I n the present study, a total of 200 diabetic patients and 100 age and gender-matched healthy controls were analysed. All the patients with diabetes mellitus were broadly divided into two study groups as follows: Control DM group: 100 patients with controlled DM, and Uncontrolled DM group: 100 patients with uncontrolled DM. After obtaining the informed consent, salivary and blood samples were taken from all the patients at following time intervals: Eight hours after fasting (Fasting samples), Postprandial (After two hours of having food), and Random (Anytime of the day). Autoanalyzer was then used for assessing the salivary and blood glucose levels. All the observations were recorded tabulated & subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software. Results: Among the patients with uncontrolled DM, significant association was found among salivary and blood glucose levels (p- value < 0.05). Among the patients with controlled DM, non- significant association was found among postprandial and random salivary and blood glucose levels (p- value > 0.05). However; while assessing the correlation between fasting salivary and blood glucose levels among patients with controlled diabetes, significant results were obtained. Among the patients with healthy controls, non- significant association was found among postprandial and random salivary and blood glucose levels (p- value > 0.05). However; while assessing the correlation between fasting salivary and blood glucose levels among patients with healthy controls, significant results were obtained. Conclusion: In diabetic patients, there is a significant increase in salivary glucose levels. Also in patients with controlled/uncontrolled diabetes and healthy subjects, fasting glucose levels of blood significantly correlate with fasting salivary glucose levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
