Archaic symposium was a spectacle based on words. Performers used words in order to push their audience’s imagination beyond the walls of sympotic space and to recreate different settings, such as idyllic gardens or the city’s agora. This phenomenon may be compared to the “verbal scenography” employed by theatre authors and makes sympotic poems embedded with visual allusions to either pragmatic or imaginary settings.
