A comprehensive succession plan is critical to future organizational success but, often overlooked. Finding a "fit" between executive leadership and strategic direction of the organization is crucial. The term "strategic succession planning" (SSP) is used to describe the integrative relationship between the strategic plan and an effective succession plan. Modern succession planning reflects a shift towards strategic orientation models developing competencies required for future leadership. The authors discuss the state of strategic succession planning in the healthcare industry and review current literature on executive succession planning. The link between academia and practice collaboration is examined. Survey results from executives and board members of healthcare organizations, highlighting key observations and interviews are discussed. Specific recommendations for healthcare management educators and healthcare executives on improving implementation of SSP for long-term success are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
