Determining suitable container ports for offshore wind farms based on geographical information system-analytic hierarchy process: a case study of Marmara Sea.

Abstrakt: Establishment of offshore wind farms requires an optimum selection of ports on which installation and operation and maintenance will be done. Although there are studies on offshore wind farm suitability for Turkey in the literature, there is a lack of port suitability study for offshore wind farms in the country. In this study, the suitability of container ports is investigated using a combination of geographical information system (GIS) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to enable an easy and fast decision-making process along with visualization of the results. A case study is demonstrated to help decision-makers select the most suitable container ports for potential offshore wind farm areas on the Marmara Sea. Results show that for an offshore wind farm in the Tekirdağ area, Asya Port carries the highest weight followed by İçdaş Port with nearly twofold of the final scores of the following candidate port for both types of ports. For a potential offshore wind farm at Saroz, Port of Çanakkale was found as the best selection with final scores of 0.13 and 0.15, as installation and operation and maintenance (O&M) ports, respectively. Çelebi Port has the highest final scores of both types of ports for a potential İmralı offshore wind farm while İçdaş port has the greatest final score for Karabiga offshore wind farm. Distance to wind farm criteria is found to be the overwhelming criterion for selecting suitable OWF installation and (O&M) ports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
