Abstrakt: Discusses ancient commentaries about the omission of line195 in Book 21 of "Iliad" by some sources, which made Acheloios, instead of Ocean, the origin of all waters, including the sea. Argument that the version without Iliad 21.195 actually represents the earlier textual stage; Role of Acheloios paralleled in the poem interpreted in the Derveni papyrus; Parallels of the features of Acheloios' cosmological function and his iconography in the Near East; Persistence of Acheloios' function as the origin of all fresh water and the source of all springs; Cultic role of Acheloios in Dodona.
