Mr. Poitier, making my way through my actor training speech impediment and was wrestling with my identity as a Black man, a Black Southern man who was now in a training program that was telling me I didn't sound like a "real" actor. I was talking with our manager about Sidney and he said Sidney told him, "If I die one day, I want to be buried underneath the brunch food at Spago, I love it so much." Poitier was following Obama not just as a voter and a Black man, but as someone aware of the pressures - and dangers - of being a "first." FEATURES Dear Mr. Poitier After more than a half-century, the actor's searing film performances continue to inspire and embolden. [Extracted from the article] |
