Abstrakt: Course variations of the internal carotid artery are often neglected, although they are relatively common, presenting both anatomic-clinical relevances as well as surgical and endovascular importance. Material and methods: a retrospective study of 50 patients with non-atherosclerotic carotid vascular axis investigated by CT angiography, aiming to demonstrate the frequency and types of path variations of the internal carotid artery in its cervical portion. Results: 37% of the carotid arteries included in the study group showed variations in trajectory, the most common being elongation. The results were compared with the literature. Conclusions: Course abnormalities of the cervical internal carotid artery require recognition and rigorous evaluation and are often encountered in routine examinations, being a real risk factor for neurovascular pathology.
