Expression is a (mostly) peaceful album of beautiful, noncentered music that's unique in his catalog. The album's cover reflects what was captured on this album (due to that mike leakage): the band in front of the orchestra, which is in front of the choir. Released as a two-LP set by Capitol in 1969, this is the cornerstone album from the Bay Area psychedelic music revolution that many listeners today are unfamiliar with. This short album - a half-hour long but all prime cut - is a collaboration between Bartz and producers/musicians Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest; they invited Bartz to join their "numbered" Jazz Is Dead project. More homage than imitation, the album is packed with great songs and seductive big-sky sounds: languid reverb, steely strings, tremolo guitar, and even a musical saw snuck in for a few good measures.
