The article is devoted to the issue of studying the basics of artistic ceramics in the educational process of the institution of primary art education. The author’s pedagogical experience in making ceramic toys by pupils in sculpture classes in these educational institutions and the peculiarities of mastering it by students are highlighted. It is noted that an art school is an out-of-school art education institution, where the educational process is carried out according to state and author’s programs, includes teaching art subjects (drawing, painting, composition, sculpture, art history), which promotes artistic development. The sculpture as an object of fine arts is very important because it promotes the development of spatial vision as well as it teaches to model the shape and texture of the image. The main peculiarities of the master potter’s work processes, methods of forming and decorating ceramic toys, functional properties, features of plastic, colour, ornamentation are considered. The stages of creating a sketch of the product, preparation of clay mass for sculpture classes, materials for work are described. Some following methods of sculpting used in the manufacture of individual toys are presented: cylindrical (the basis of the product is a cylinder) and the method of “dumplings”, methods of invoices (mechanical and hand-made), drying process, baking clay toys, whitewashing and painting, methods of decorative processing of ceramics (polishing, smoking, engobe, use of paints, pigments and salts, etc.). The sequence of making hollow toy products by students – “piggy bank”, “rattle fish”, methodological advice of how to organize classes and support for students in making ceramic toys. The described system of making ceramic toys in sculpture classes can be used in the educational process of specialized art and aesthetics secondary schools, secondary art education institutions, art colleges, children’s art centres, clubs, creative associations and other educational institutions.
